In reply to Claudia England.

The "priesthood" in the Mormon Church is defined as the power and authority to act in the name of Christ. The Mormon Church has a lay clergy -- there are no trained or paid ministers or priests. All worthy male members of the Church age 12 and over may hold some office in the priesthood.

The way to serve in the priesthood is first to become a member of the Church. Then, you have to be male. (Women participate in priesthood ordinances in our temples, however.) As a male member of the Church lives righteously and learns about the gospel, he will advance in the priesthood and be called from time to time to serve in Mormon congregations.

In reply to john.

The word "priesthood" means something different in Mormonism. It is power and authority to act in Christ's name. It is bestowed upon all worthy male members of our church, which doesn't have a paid clergy.

The Jews have trained rabbis to lead congregations and teach. They also track their lineage of Aaronic descent.

Catholic priests train for the ministry and then are ordained to serve. It's another thing entirely.

I am interested in knowing how one becomes a priest in the Mormon Church and does the Church have a centralized "place" to stay while studying for the priesthood or do individuals churches teach what must be learned by a person wanting to become a Mormom priest? We live in Houston, Tx and was wondering if there is a local place where one can stay to become a Mormon priest. I look forward to your reply.
