In reply to <a href="https://whymormonism.org/94/word_of_wisdom_mormonism#comment-469">John West</a>.

Thanks, John, for visiting the site. The Church of Jesus Christ was restored to the earth by the Savior Himself, who appeared in 1820, to re-establish the truths, principles of happiness, plan of salvation, and authority, to the earth to provide salvation for all who would believe. That starting point is critical to my response to your questions. The teachings that have resulted have not been of men, but are of Him. He has asked us to keep our bodies pure and clean, to be receptacles of His Spirit which guides us into truth, comforts and directs us, as He would if He were physically among us still. The Word of Wisdom is a law He's given us, and had delivered at a time when the ills and harms of tobacco and caffeine for human consumption were not even known. Tea, non-herbal, is a stimulant. Our concern is in following the Lord's commandments, and our knowledge that this is one of His for our benefit, comes from a personal witness that this is His Church. So that brings me around to the first part of your comment, and I'd like to inquire as to whether or not you've read The Book of Mormon, Another Testament of Jesus Christ? If this volume of scripture comes from God--and He will tell you whether or not it does as you prayerfully read it and ask Him after an honest study--then all the rest is true. We do not wish to contend points of doctrine but appreciate honest inquiry. I'd be glad to send you a free copy of The Book of Mormon for your personal study. May God bless you in your spiritual walk.

Hi, well I have a classmate friend whom I deeply admire who is also a very old friend of my wife who is Mormon, converting in her 30's I believe. (we are all in the 69-70 range now) I also have two other male friends with much less desirable atributes that I will not go into who are mormon. Anyhow, the mix of these has made me curious so I have been studying through your website. (I already have the mormon books and do not remember how I came about them.) There is much about the faith I doubt but I have some specific questions concerning this page. I note black and green tea are ruled against as is all alcohol. It is fairly common knowledge that these two teas have numerous health values as does very limited consumption of dark wine. In view of the first miracle of Jesus I wonder why these specific prohibitions persist. Thank you if you do respond and thank you if you do not. I just am studying to get the true picture of the Mormon faith as I doubt I am getting it from my own denomination (Presbyterian EPC). John West
