BYU (Brigham Young University) is operated by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, often mistakenly called the “Mormon Church.” BYU students take nearly a semester of spiritually uplifting, stimulating religion classes.
In this series (see below), students enrolled in scripture study classes have shared their thoughts, insights, and reflections on the Book of Mormon in the form of letters to someone they know. We invite you to take a look at their epiphanies and discoveries as they delve into the scriptures.
In publishing these, we fulfill their desire to speak to all of us of the relevance, power and beauty of the Book of Mormon, a second witness of Jesus Christ and complement to the Bible. The Book of Mormon includes the religious history of a group of Israelites who settled in ancient America. (The names they use are those of prophets who taught the Book of Mormon peoples to look forward to the coming of Christ—Nephi, Lehi, Alma, Helaman, and other unfamiliar names. We hope those names will become more familiar to you as you read their inspiring words and feel the relevance and divinity of their messages through these letters.)
Let us know if you’d like to receive your own digital copy of the Book of Mormon, and/or if these messages encourage and assist you spiritually as well.
Mormonism: Putting Christ In Our Lives
I am writing this to my non-member boyfriend.
We learned a lot in my religion class this week. We studied from the Book of Mormon, which is another testament of Jesus Christ. There was a scripture that we discussed that had a really great message and I want to share it with you. The scripture is Helaman 5:12. It talks about how Christ is a sure foundation and the devil is described as a shaft in the whirlwind. I think these are really interesting descriptions because they are so accurate. Christ is a foundation and He is something we can hold onto. The devil is a whirlwind, meaning he is not very reliable. If we have Christ in our lives then we can have stability and strength and someone to trust. The devil does the opposite for us. If we do the wrong things then we have him centered in our lives, and we will not be able to have the stability that Christ provides us. I think centering Christ in our lives is something that we should think about and try to apply.
Another concept that we talked about is how Christ unites people and the devil divides us. I think this is something that we should really think about. Putting Christ into our lives can help us and keep us together. I hope that you consider this because I think it is a really good message for us. Something else we talked about is how we need to pray to God more than He needs us to pray to Him. He knows more about us than we know about ourselves, so prayers are used to find out what God’s will is for us. Praying can really benefit us as God can help us answer questions we may have, or help us when we have problems in our lives. I hope you can see the importance of prayer, and can understand why we need to center our lives around Christ.
